Referral guidelines
Neonates and infants with the following problems are appropriate for referral:

  • Infants who stop breathing or who demonstrate irregular respirations.

  • Infants have a life-threatening event's (ALTE) with cyanosis, duskiness or pallor.

  • Infants who have breathing disorders related to feeding.

  • Siblings of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) victims.

  • Infants with apnea or other ventilatory control disturbances.

  • Infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

  • Infants with obstructive sleep apnea that may manifest itself by any of the following:

    • loud snoring or noisy breathing during sleep.

    • Frequent waking associated with position changes.

    • Stridor or wheezing when asleep or awake.
